The Conferderate Army of Tennessee was formed in November 1862 as the Confederate Army in the western United States.

While Robert E. Lee and the Army of Virginia battled theUnion in the east, the Army of Tennessee faced the best of Union commanders, including Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman, throughout the entire war. And, unfortunately for the soldiers of the Army of Tennessee, their commanders, were at best inept and at worst suicidal.

The Army of Tennessee suffered a series of setbacks, culminating in the Battle of Franklin and the Battle of Nashville, where John Bell Hood recklessly sent the Army of Tennesee to its destruction.
